Influence is an interesting thing. The power to change minds, to inspire…although the job title of “influencer” is recent – the role certainly isn’t. There’s no better example in recent history than Elvis. And Baz Luhrmann’s movie has re-ignited that spark, with his new epic motion picture.
An amazing story, with exquisite costumes and stunning sets, Elvis has been the must-watch of this season of cinema. Of the many beautiful scenes in the film, we were particularly captivated by Graceland – Elvis’ home. We’re taking a peek behind the scenes to showcase the iconic interiors of Graceland, and how they can influence your next project for your home with designs we have here at NewWall.
A little about Baz Luhrmann
No one tells epic tales of tragedy quite like Baz Luhrmann. From Romeo and Juliet to Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby, this Australian-born filmmaker uses spectacular visuals and music to take the audience on a wild ride that, heartbreakingly, ends in tragedy. And, spoiler alert, Elvis is no exception.
The true story of Elvis’ career, although glamorous, is one that’s littered with grief, manipulation and betrayal. It becomes clear throughout the film that the only place where Elvis was truly at home, was at Graceland.
Warmth, love, luxury and creative energy pour from the scenes set in this country mansion, and we didn’t even get to glimpse the whole home.
We’re taking a peek at the most iconic rooms in Graceland, and how they can influence your next interior project.
Luxurious Living Rooms
If you’ve caught the movie, this particular set will need no introduction. The backdrop to many a scene, Elvis’ living room in Graceland is pure luxury. Rich golds, opulent features and soft, welcoming furnishings create a living space that is just waiting to inspire you.
For a twist on this interior, try Tres Tintas Barcelona’s Flamingos Gold. It pulls together inspiration from the gold and the ornate glasswork, but in a fresh, and modern way.
Or, if you favor something a little darker, Coordonné’s Tassel Gold could be what you’re after. Why not pair with frosted mirror tiles and recreate the feature fireplace?
A secret the film kept from us, is Elvis’s fabulous game room. Loud and proud, this design, with full coverage fabric is the inspiration fix you’ve been waiting for.
Fall in love at first sight? You can absolutely recreate this room’s aesthetic – and we can think of no better match than this Marble Gum fabric from Timorous Beasties.
Alternatively, for the textured effect without the effort, Dune from Wall&Deco will serve perfectly.
Delicious Dining Room
Another instantly recognisable backdrop, the Graceland Dining Room, with its regal pallet and features, is bursting with opportunities for a modern, homely twist.
Pay subtle homage to the King of Rock & Roll’s dining room, with Porcelaine from Coordonné. You could keep it modern, as pictured above, or, for a more obvious Elvis influence, you could pair with deep red upholstery.
Influenced by the drapes? Bring in the movement of the fabric with deeper blue tones, with Sand Waves in Sapphire.
Tantalizing TV Room
Last but certainly not least, we have the TV suite. Featuring not one, not two, but three screens, it’s safe to say Mr Presley didn’t do things by halves. And you shouldn’t either!
With a distinct art deco flavor, we can give you a taste of this tv room with some of our offerings here at NewWall.
Gatsby from Coordonne draws that same Art Deco influencer with a modern flair. Introduce stage effect spotlights, for an Elvis-influenced interior.
Or, if you’re loving the shapes he’s chosen for his walls, you should definitely go for Tres Tintas Barcelona’s Redvolution in Gold.
