Picking wallpaper can be a tricky business. With so many options out there, it can feel impossible to know where to start. So, we’ve decided it’s time to help with the first step, substrate. Read on, to discover everything you need to know before buying vinyl wallpaper (with stunning examples, provided by Tres Tintas). Lesson 1: The key features of vinyl wallpaper Vinyl wallpaper is the go-to choice for bustling spaces. Available in an array of styles, this substrate offers a simple, long-lasting solution for the wears and tears of everyday life. Brushed Concrete by Tres Tintas By far the most hardy of the substrates, vinyl is tough, water-resistant and scratch resistant. Because of this, it stays looking fresh and tarnish-free for many years. This is why it’s such a popular choice for high-traffic areas, like kitchens and bathrooms. Lesson 2: The key considerations before buying vinyl wallpaper We know, lesson 1 makes it seem like there’s no downside to vinyl wallpaper. But, before you browse, there are some things you should consider… Brushed Concrete by Tres Tintas While vinyl wallpaper has many awesome features, it isn’t the number one choice if you’re looking for an eco-friendly option. Being plastic-based, this substrate does have a greater environmental impact than other natural ones, both in regards to production and life-cycle. Also, it’s hard enough to stand strong against damage, but it can be even tougher to remove. Because it’s water-resistant, you’ll likely need expert help to remove without causing damage. Lesson 3: Installing vinyl wallpaper Before you buy your wallpaper, you should always review the product specifications. Our products here at NewWall will always include details on: Grade (residential or commercial use) Dimensions (width & height) Format (made to measure murals/panels) Vertical/Horizontal repeats (how long before the pattern repeats) Wall coverage (sq. yards) Hanging method These help you understand what exactly you need to consider before you install your wallpaper. Troweled Concrete by Tres Tintas You should pay particular attention to the hanging method. For our Tres Tintas vinyl offerings, the method is “paste the wall”. As always, we recommend getting an expert pair of hands in to install your wallpaper, but if you insist on the DIY approach, this is the method for you. To help you along the way, here’s how to install it: 1. Prep Clean the wall to remove any dust or dirt. Then, apply a suitable primer to help the paste adhere better. If the wall’s painted, you might need to lightly sand the surface to make sure the paste adheres properly. Wait until the wall is dry before you continue. 2. Measure If you’ve ordered panels with us, you’ll need to measure the height and width of the wall to determine how much wallpaper you’ll need. Always buy a bit extra to allow for pattern repeats and mistakes. Broomed Concrete by Tres Tintas 3. Cutting Panel wallpaper comes in rolls. Unroll the wallpaper on a flat, clean surface and cut lengths according to your measurements, allowing a bit of extra length at the top and bottom for trimming. Be sure to align the pattern correctly if your wallpaper has a design. 4. Applying Paste Directly apply the adhesive to the wall using a paint roller. Ensure you apply it evenly over the area where your first strip will go. 5. Hanging Wallpaper Start from a corner or use a plumb line for a straight start. Hang the first piece at the top of the wall, allowing a bit to overlap with the ceiling, which you can trim later. Smooth the paper down with a wallpaper smoother or a clean, dry cloth, working out any air bubbles. 6. Trimming Once the wallpaper is in place, use a sharp utility knife to trim excess wallpaper at the top and bottom for a perfect fit. 7. Repeat Continue this process with the next strip, ensuring the patterns match up if your wallpaper has a design. Overlap the edges slightly to avoid gaps as the wallpaper dries. 8. Clean Lastly, clean off any excess paste with a damp sponge before it dries. Lesson 4: Caring for your vinyl wallpaper Vinyl wallpaper is by far the easiest to care for out of the substrates. When it’s time for a clean, simply wipe down with soap (or a mild detergent) and water. Broomed Concrete by Tres Tintas We hope you found this lesson in vinyl helpful!
