Maria’s Edit: Home Away From Home

By Maria RacoApr 16, 2023
No one understands bittersweet quite like a parent. Throughout the years, we find ourselves eagerly turning the pages, chasing the next twist and embracing every turn that parenthood throws our way. But then all of a sudden, the chapter ends. Even though we long to turn back and keep with the story we’re familiar with, we’re so excited to see what comes next.

With Graduation around the corner, I thought it would be a great time to help you navigate this latest plot twist, and share my interior tips for helping your family build their first home away from home.

1. A neutral base

Listen, we’ve all dabbled in questionable interiors…it’s a natural part of growing up! But, you can help your kids experiment with their dorm style in the right way.
When picking out a palette, encourage a neutral base (think grays, whites and creams), especially for light shades, curtains and bedding.

That way, you leave room for unique accessories that allow a first dabble in expression with throws, rugs and artwork.

2. Wonderful wall art

Let’s avoid the Dorm tropes of artsy movie posters that have never actually been watched…and instead gift some wall art of something they actually love.

It could be a professional print of a loved photo, a poster of a piece of artwork, or even a NewWall favorite fabric/wallpaper sample, framed!

3. Store in style

Nothing ruins a small space faster than clutter. Granted, your child may not have learnt that valuable life lesson yet – but you can help steer them in the right direction!
Storage solutions can be stylish – especially when incorporated into a nook/cozy corner. Take a corner of the room, and use it to make storage a feature.

You could wrap boxes in stylish design or drape a beautiful fabric as a backdrop!

4. Natural is always now

There are certain things that never go out of style. Natural materials is one of those wonderful things. Think wood, rattan, bamboo, jute. All add warmth and texture that those plain dorm rooms crave.
