Destinations of Distinction: 5 Iconic Luxury Escapes Reimagined in Wallpaper

Destinations of Distinction: 5 Iconic Luxury Escapes Reimagined in Wallpaper

By Maria RacoMar 20, 2026

There’s something about a place that stays with you long after you’ve left…not just the view, but the feeling. The way light hits a wall, the textures under your fingertips, the details that feel entirely its own.

For me, interiors have always been tied to these moments. The most beautiful spaces don’t exist in isolation, they’re shaped by culture, landscape, and atmosphere. This month, I’ve been thinking about five destinations that have defined their own visual language…and how that translates into the walls we live with every day.

New York: Art Deco Glamor

There’s a certain confidence to New York interiors that never tries too hard, but always lands. I always think of the Upper East Side…pre-war apartments, perfectly placed mouldings, and that unmistakable Art Deco influence running through it all.

Mexico: Earthy Modernism

In Mexico, it’s the architecture that stays with me…the sun-warmed walls of Tulum villas, the bold planes of colour in Mexico City, spaces where earth and design feel inseparable.

What I love most is the way architecture and nature sit side by side…raw plaster walls, sun-faded pigments, terracotta underfoot. It’s minimal, but never stark. There’s always a softness to it, a sense that everything has been shaped by hand.

This is where wallpaper becomes about texture as much as pattern. Washed colour, organic movement, surfaces that feel almost imperfect. It’s less about making a statement, and more about grounding a space…bringing in warmth, depth, and that connection to the natural world.

Kyoto: Intentional Minimalism

In Kyoto, you feel it immediately…the calm of a tatami room, filtered light through paper screens, interiors that are shaped as much by what’s left out as what’s brought in.

There’s a calmness to the interiors that feels almost intentional in its restraint. Natural wood, paper screens, soft light…it’s all about what’s left unsaid. Every element has space to breathe.

In this setting, wallpaper needs to be incredibly considered. Subtle textures, barely-there patterns, tonal shifts that reveal themselves slowly. It’s all about crafting atmosphere…creating a backdrop that supports stillness rather than competing with it.

Marrakech: Layered Opulence

Step into a Marrakech riad, and everything shifts…intricate tiles underfoot, carved plaster walls, and layers of pattern that unfold with every glance.

It’s rich, expressive, full of detail. Pattern on pattern, color on color, every surface telling its own story. From tiled courtyards to intricately carved plaster, there’s a sense of craftsmanship that feels deeply rooted in tradition.

Wallpaper here becomes an opportunity to embrace that same layered beauty. Intricate repeats, bold motifs, deeper palettes…designs that invite you to look closer. It’s about creating a space that feels immersive, a little indulgent, and full of personality.

Paris: Effortless Classicism

In Paris, it’s often the apartments that leave the strongest impression…Haussmann interiors with their tall windows, ornate mouldings, and that effortless sense of lived-in elegance.

There’s an ease to Parisian interiors that feels almost impossible to replicate…elegant, but never overworked. Ornate mouldings, herringbone floors…yet somehow it all feels relaxed, like it’s been lived in for years.

Wallpaper in these spaces works best when it complements rather than competes. Soft stripes, delicate patterns, quiet detailing that sits comfortably alongside architectural features. It’s a fine balance; you aim to enhance what’s already there.

The beauty of interiors is that they allow us to borrow from the places that inspire us most. A detail here, a texture there…small references that bring a sense of story into our everyday spaces.

Because sometimes, the most meaningful design choices aren’t about trends at all. They’re about capturing a feeling…and finding a way to live with it.
