As a species, we have a profound connection with the outdoors. Our deep rooted fascination has sent us from the farthest reaches of space, to the deepest depths of the oceans. This appreciation for our natural world extends from explorations into our interiors, and by simply glancing through history, we can see indoor spaces decorated with celebrations of the outdoors.
At Newwall, we have the pleasure of showcasing some of the most phenomenal interior homages to the outdoors, including many spectacular collections from House of Hackney. Today, we’re taking a peek behind the brand, to help inspire your next interior creation.
Meet House of HackneyEstablished in 2010 by partners in business and life, Frieda Gormley and Javvy M Royle, House of Hackney was born from a love of Victorian interior creations, in particular, the works of William Morris. Since then, the power couple have extended their reach across the globe, from their flagship store in the heart of London’s Shoreditch, to their very own collections here at Newwall. A sanctuary for the outdoors, House of Hackney is the ultimate place to discover beautiful interiors influenced by nature and our history.
Victorians and the outdoorsFor Gormley and Royle, the designs of the Victorian era are very much the inspiration for their stunning creations. This period of history is a fascinating one. The industrial revolution transformed the opportunities available for interior design, as machine-made prints made it possible for the middle classes to introduce dedicent, ornate pieces that were previously only available for the aristocracy. Dramatic contrasts and bold designs are signature for this era, as well as a fascination with orientalism. William Morris was a massive contributor to the Arts & Crafts movement. A novelist, poet, socialist activist and textile designer, Morris’ inspiration from nature and his innovation in manufacturing were largely responsible for the Victorian’s love of outdoor homaged interiors, and House of Hackney’s designs today.
Victorian meets modern“The past is not dead, it is living in us, and will be alive in the future which we are now helping to make.” William Morris. When gazing upon House of Hackney’s Pampas design, it may seem to be worlds away from your expectations of Victorian design influence. The tangerine and azalea contrasts create a striking piece that’s decidedly modern, however at closer inspection you’ll see the historic influence is undeniable. Morris believed that the beauty, imagination and order of nature could be imitated in art, a notion that’s beautifully captured in this piece. Pair with natural, wood furnishings for a Morris-inspired match.

Illustrate your interiorGormley and Royle were not the first to be inspired by the creations of William Morris, and they certainly won’t be the last. CFA Voycey was a great admirer of Morris’ Arts & Crafts contributions, and they were of great influence to him when creating his Alice in Wonderland wallpaper from John Tenial’s original illustrations. Art is never a completely unique concept, we are always inspired by the innovations that have come before. This design is a historic piece representing celebration of others, a wonderful mantra to introduce into your home.

Be bold, with Mary DelanyWhen considering Victorian artistry and outdoor influence, House of Hackney couldn’t miss the opportunity to showcase the works of Mary Delany. A skilled gardener, artist, needleworker and paper cutter, her fascination with botany is clear throughout her designs. Delany’s creations are the epitome of Victorian style. Bold and beautiful, Delany uses extreme contrasts in color to create striking pieces that refuse to blend in.
