As the molecules within the metal realign under ever increasing heat, specific wavelengths of light are either intensified or attenuated within a vanishingly thin iron oxide layer at the surface of the material.The result is an exceptionally specific spectrum of color - from a pale bronze to deep purple to a grey blue - simultaneously mercurial and predictable, akin to the fleeting colors of soap bubbles and oil films.
