Embracing the Outdoors, 5 Lessons Learned

Embracing the Outdoors, 5 Lessons Learned

By Maria RacoFeb 27, 2024

I don’t know about you, but for me, last winter felt dragged. Now the Summer is here, I’ve made it my mission to make the most of it. 2024 is my time to embrace all things outdoors.

The nature of my role is all about helping people perfect their interiors…but as I’ve begun prioritizing outdoor experiences I’ve realized, there’s a lot we can learn and apply to our indoor inspirations. Here are 5 things I’ve been thinking about.

1. Formula to Thrive

As I began taking an active interest in gardening, I discovered that selecting the perfect plants is a very similar process to shopping for wallcoverings. The surroundings are as important a consideration as the plant itself - you need the perfect formula for the space to thrive.

When selecting your wallpaper or fabrics, be sure that the space is working for them, not against them!

2. The power of plants

Did you know that different plants have different hidden powers? From air purity to humidity prevention, stress reduction to sound absorption, by welcoming these plants indoors, you unlock these incredible powers for your space!

3. Embracing openness

I’ve found that outdoor explorations gave my mind space to reset and recharge. But we want that from our interiors too, right?

My solarium has offered that exact experience for me. Embracing the openness and space, with complete access to natural light, allows me to enjoy the mindfulness of outdoor experiences from my home.

4. Tactile textures

Something I find underrated about gardening and outdoor explorations, is the tactile textures! From the rough bark of trees to soft moss underfoot, it reminded me of the importance of the touch-factor when styling interiors.

Try incorporating contrasting textures into your space to create an ultra-pleasing, rounded interior design.

5. Welcome imperfection

Outside, nature takes the lead in deciding the aesthetic. Wild, free and unexpected, it’s incredible how beautiful, unexpected harmonies appear in the most unexpected places.

This is an important lesson to carry through for interior design. Remember, creativity and exploration can create more opportunities for beauty than perfection can.

I hope you enjoyed this mini exploration of the lessons we can learn from embracing the outdoors. Each month, I share my experiences, tips and favorite things across all things interior design. You can browse all my suggestions below..
