Some designs fade with fashion, but others linger. They take root in our memory, surprising us each time we return to them. In this series, I’m revisiting the wallpapers that have become part of NewWall’s story, designs that still feel as vital, provocative, and inspiring as the day we first introduced them.
This month, my spotlight turns to 17 Patterns, a London studio built on collaboration and creativity. Each design begins as an artwork, reshaped into repeat through experimentation and play. The result is a body of work that is eclectic, brave, and unmistakably original. And that’s exactly why it endures.
Wild Motifs
Nature is a constant muse in design, but 17 Patterns never treats it as predictable. Love Leopard takes the language of animal print and refines it into something strikingly modern. Its dark motifs peppered against softer tones create contrast that feels as contemporary as it does primal.
Forager offers another lens on the natural world: mushrooms, fungi, and woodland textures transformed into a layered print. Whether in subtle mica or fluorescent on black, it reminds me that even the smallest forms of nature can carry richness and drama.
And then there’s Flamingo: a colony of elegant birds reimagined through London ink pools and pastel hues. Stylized yet graceful, it captures the flamboyance of its namesake without ever feeling overdone.
Together, these designs prove how enduring nature can be when filtered through a truly creative lens.
Fluid Worlds
Few designs capture movement as vividly as Jellyfish. This aquatic mural submerges you in coral reefs, trailing tentacles, and electric color.
It’s not just underwater life, it’s rhythm and flow translated to the wall. Similarly, Whirling Dervish draws on Venetian grandeur and urban brushwork, spiralling in fluorescent or monochrome sweeps.
These designs endure because they embody motion, filling a room with energy rather than stillness.
Floral Narratives
17 Patterns also excels at reimagining the floral. Protea’s Dream, created with illustrator Rina Vakuleva, is more than decoration: it’s mythic. Inspired by the King Protea, it represents strength and hope in hand-drawn blooms that feel both ancient and daring.
Kimolia, by contrast, is a layered paradise of chalk-shaded foliage. Botanical yet otherworldly, its scale and depth turning walls into storybook forests.
These florals endure because they are as symbolic as they are beautiful, each one telling a story.
What unites these works is a spirit of invention. 17 Patterns thrives on collaboration, curiosity, and an artist’s refusal to settle. Their wallpapers last not because they follow trends, but because they transform walls into living canvases; always bold, always imaginative, always alive.
