Scenes from the showroom: Design in the Depths
Here in the NewWall Showroom, every detail is considered, from the largest mural to the smallest trim. This month, we’re taking you on a tour of our lower-level washroom. With its noir palette and layered mix of finishes, it’s a space that shows how thoughtful styling can bring depth and drama to even the most compact rooms.
A Noir Narrative
One of the most impactful choices in this window treatment is scale. The drapes are intentionally oversized, longer than necessary, with deep folds and a gentle puddle at the floor.
When challenged with styling a darker space, the instinct is usually to bring in as much light as possible. But sometimes, the best way to design a room is by leaning into its shadows, depth, contrast, and atmosphere rather than fighting against them.
The lower-level washroom embraces darkness rather than fighting it. The noir scheme turns the compact footprint into a design statement, proving that small spaces don’t need to feel light and bright to succeed.
Instead, the dark palette creates intimacy and sophistication, encouraging details like texture, lighting, and materiality to take centre stage.
Textured Foundations
At the heart of the washroom is Yoku, from Wall&decò’s Essentials collection. The design offers a structured yet organic rhythm; a surface that holds depth even in muted tones.
In a room with less natural light, this matters. The walls don’t fall flat; they shift subtly as light moves across them, creating a quiet dimension. Yoku sets the foundation: refined, textural, and grounding.
Added Atmosphere
Lighting plays a pivotal role in shaping the noir mood. The 1960’s Murano table lamp, finished with a custom shade, acts as both functional light and sculptural object. Its hand-blown glass carries a sense of craft and individuality, while its warm glow softens the depth of the walls.
Overhead, the 1940’s crystal ceiling fixture introduces a different character, refracting light into prisms, scattering gentle highlights across the space.
Together, these fixtures layer illumination in ways that feel intimate, glamorous, and atmospheric.
Crafting Character
In a smaller space, every detail counts a little bit more. The pieces you choose have the power to transform the tone. That’s why we leaned on vintage finds here, because nothing builds character quite like something with a history.
The 3-drawer marble-top armoire brings function, but the custom paint inside and out makes it feel personal, almost like a hidden detail waiting to be found.
Nearby, the 1930’s bronze statue adds weight and presence. Its patina tells its own story, standing in contrast to the clean surface of Yoku. Together, they turn a compact washroom into a space with layers and personality.
Depths Worth Exploring
What makes this washroom memorable is not just one element but the conversation between them. Yoku provides structure; the lighting transforms shadow into highlight; the vintage pieces add narrative and surprise. Together, they prove that even the most tucked-away rooms can carry as much intention as the main spaces.
Whether it’s a washroom, bedroom, or dining space, the right mix of surfaces, lighting, and character pieces can completely change the mood. If you’d like guidance on bringing that same balance of depth and detail into your own project, we’d love to help.
