This winter, we’ve all been welcomed back to Suzanne Collins’ world of The Hunger Games. In anticipation for the blockbuster, we decided to have a little fun here at NewWall – and explore how we would design interiors inspired by the districts. |
Welcome to the Hunger GamesA dystopian future, set in a re-imagined North American Country, Panem. The Hunger Games series is a story of revolution, human resilience and power. |

Throughout the stories, Collins consistently utilizes costume design to characterize, emphasize and illuminate the differences between the Capitol and the 13 districts. This got us thinking, how would these same inspirations translate into interiors? Here’s what we came up with… |
The Capitol: Exaggerated extravaganceThe Capitol is known for its opulence and excess. The makers and consumers of the controversial Hunger Games, characters from this district are styled eccentrically, with flamboyant, brightly colored, and outlandish clothing. So, what would their interiors look like? We immediately thought of Fluo Wood from Artmura… |
Fluo Wood Chameleon by Artmura |
The stark contrast of natural wood pattern and extreme vibrance of green and pink screams Capitol style. And even more so, when paired with a contrasting abstract pattern either on walls or furnishings (or…probably both!). |
District 1 – All Out OpulenceDistrict 1 is all about luxury. Described as the most fashion-forward, characters are usually shown wearing opulent, extravagant clothing. So, how would this translate to interiors? We think rich, extravagant tones would shine through – but in a far more classically regal sense than the Capitol… |
|
We envision an almost French aristocratic theme, with rich golds, vibrant reds and immaculately polished hardwood floors. |
District 2 – PracticalDistrict 2 is the militant base – but would their home aesthetic be bunker-basic? We think not! The characters we meet from this area typically have practical and durable styles. So, naturally, their homes would follow suit. For this district, the obvious choice has to be vinyl. |
We see textured styles like Zip, which offer a classic modern appearance, with easy maintenance and trusted resilience. This, paired with invisible storage and modern minimalist furnishings creates the ordered characteristics of the district. |
District 3 – The TechiesDistrict 3 is portrayed as the tech hub of Panem, and typically features futuristic and high-tech stylings with metallic and electronic elements. But how would we style their spaces? |
Urbania instantly came to mind. Its bright, geometric design lends a futuristic feel with a real homely charm. And, with all that tech education, we bet they’d need some stylish bookcases to go with it! |
District 4 – Coastal dwellersDistrict 4 is known for fishing, and is portrayed through characters with a coastal, aquatic theme. Naturally, the sea would seep into their stylings…but not necessarily in a literal sense. |
The calming, deep blues and beautifully sweeping patterns of Diving Moment, paired with mismatched, charming wooden furnishings would make a perfect home for District 4. |
District 5 – Electric EclecticsDistrict 5 provides power and electricity for Panem. So, their homes should also carry a stylish spark…and for that, we’d turn to Magnetika. |
Vibrant, positive, bright – we think the homes of District 5 would light up with a style of this kind. |
District 6 – IndustrialDistrict 6 is all about industrial work. For this, we had to do a take on modern industrial design. The fusion of raw, gritty industrial elements with modern, comfortable features would be beautifully softened with a design like Interpiano. |
District 7 – Woodland wandersAs the lumber district, District 7’s stylings in the series often focus on earthy and natural elements. |
We’d turn to nature for design inspirations here, with a feature piece like Tree of Life offering stunning visual interest, surrounded by clean, modern furnishing. |
District 8 – Fabulous fabricsResponsible for textiles and clothing, it would be wrong not to include fabulous fabric features in this interior inspiration. |
We envisage rich, heavily hung fabrics taking center stage, with eclectic furnishings for an added touch of unique charm. |
District 9 – Farmhouse chicDistrict 9 is primarily involved in grain agriculture. So, we instantly thought of farmhouse chic, cozy vibes. |
A charming pattern like Metamorphic Birds, paired with rustic furnishings and comfort-first seating, is the perfect way to achieve this. |
District 10 – Living for leatherDistrict 10’s focus is livestock and agriculture – but we don’t think the farmhouse chic style of 9 would fit so well here… |
Instead, we see an earthier style that plays on the elements that they work with. Tanner gives the appearance of leather (using organic textured silk), to get a stunning textured mural wall. |
District 11 – Fruit & VegThe fruit & veg farmers of Panem, we picture District 11 with a warm, traditional style. |
Quality antiques and quality brickerbrack, adorning a dark yet welcomingly decorated space. |
District 12 – Cozy CaveDistrict 12, home of the Mockingjay herself. This is the district we see the most of in the movies, and here’s how we’d style their interiors… |
As the mining district, we had to go with deep, dark and moody tones to create the ultimate cozy cave. Black, dark wood and warm, fiery tones tie this chic space together – all that’s needed is a woodland view. |
District 13 – MinimalistUsing neutral tones and natural materials, we’d breathe air and light into the stifled underground 13. So, there you have it! We hope you enjoyed this dive into the interior inspirations we’d pull from The Hunger Games world. Like a particular style? Filter to find your favorites. |
District 13 is the secret of Panem. Hiding underground, their style in the movies is very minimalist, and focused on functionality. For this District, we’d apply a minimalist theme that uses a little visual trickery to celebrate their hiding abilities… |
